'Blackdown Hobbit Wagons' was born from the need to solve a very common family problem.
Like most families, there came a time when our children grew up and, sadly, the farm cottage, where we raised them, wasn't getting any larger.
Tensions grew until, one day, it became obvious that something had to change before someone got hurt!
Enter: The idea of putting a 'Shepherd's Hut' in the back garden!
I quickly employed my skills as a wood craftsman to build my daughter a bespoke hut that was, in many ways, more like a 'Gypsy Wagon'.
I found it almost impossible to keep my heart and soul out of the project and 'frills and furbelows' flowed from my hands until we finally beheld one of the most 'fairytale-like' dwellings that many people had ever seen.
The inside was, equally, cute, with 'Beatrix Potter-style' touches; curves and curtains, draws and drawstrings; the quintessential romantic residence.
And so, came the idea.......Why not build another, and another, for others to enjoy!
What we have here, then, is your opportunity to own a beautiful 'Wagon'. In fact, a 'Hobbit Wagon'; incorporating not only a 'Fairytale' flavour, but one of 'Folklore & Legend'; an almost 'Tolkein-esque' experience!
Read on.....
At our Yard, here in Devon, we're currently working on a wagon that embodies some of the more eccentric style of Bilbo's house. A round window, in the side, and a huge round door, at the front, will be among the features that the proud owner of this wagon will enjoy.
Our plan is to talk with each customer about the cosmetic and, of course, the practical elements of a new build.
Among the options will be the inclusion of a wood-burning stove, maybe cooking facilities or, even, hot & cold running water.
Why not call us or even arrange a visit to the workshop?
Strength and stability are hugely important. As a designer, I have zero tolerance of flimsy, cheap, mass-produced and, possibly, imported products. Four, heavyweight wheels and axles support the 3.6 meter chassis.
No messing about!
This is where my designs part company from those of most shepherd's huts. Straight lines are almost never found in nature and we aim to emulate that. Strong, plywood, formers give the wagon it's characteristic shape and provide, not only beauty, but more room inside.
Redwood, shiplap timber is screwed to the formers, providing the outer skin. Later, a thick layer of insulation will be put between it and the inner wall.
'Blackdown Hobbit Wagons' is a very new enterprise.
As mentioned previously, 'Wagon No.2' is still in production and it's completion will be very exciting!
As more progress is made, more information and photos will be added to this site so keep watching!
